Chickens, ya I have six backyard chickens and no I have not named them. Collectively they are referred to as Ladies or Girls. Originally I got four chickens to help combat the infestation of Morning Glory in a corner of my yard. I penned in the area built a coop and bought four ready to lay birds. All was good for about a year, the birds ate the Morning Glory, produced enough eggs for me, my neighbors and a few friends. It all changed one July morning I was sipping my morning coffee watching the sun rise above the neighborhood when I noticed something strange in the chicken pen.
How did a large chunk of bark..... then it hit me what I was seeing across the yard behind the protective fence was a dead chicken! I put on outdoor appropriate clothing a ran out, my chickens, my Girls were dead, all of them. Something had torn them apart there were chicken parts every where but no blood. I buried the Girls and for me life went on.
Seems I had gotten lazy, you see after a few months I was no longer locking the Girls in their coop each night, and so I didn't have to let them out each morning. And I now know their death was my fault, locked in the coop they were safe from predators that wander the night, house cats, Racoons, Wiesels and who knows what else. I had thought the fully enclosed pen would keep all the evil out, I was wrong. Perhaps something got through the bird mesh that covered the top of the pen, but a few have told me from the description of the murder scene the perp was most likely a Wiesel, and the wire mesh fencing I used for the walls has an opening possibly big enough for a Wiesel to get through. So I built The Penitentiary, I fully enclosed the compound in the wire mesh, no large predators can get in, but a Wiesel still might just fit in. In November I got six new birds, I keep them on a strict up and into the exercise yard at sunup and off to bed at sunset, safely locked away every night. The coop is Weisel proof. It is a bit of a pain to have to go out twice a day and open/close the coop door, but better than reliving the massacre of July 2014. Lately I have been researching automatic coop doors perhaps one day I will install one until then, every day I open the coop to let the Girls play.
My Girls produce six eggs most days, and the Morning Glory is gone!
RIP
